Typography

Colour: Colour is used differently throughout all the images in typography depending on the artist.  Some artists use dark colours, This helps presents meaning or a theme throughout the artists work. In this example of colour some images colour lack emotion because of the colour artist have chosen to use. But also in images the are bold and vivid throughout some artists work this gives a more positive approach to their work. Artist normally use a base colour followed by busy colour on top because it doesn't make their work look busy but clean.

Main images: Typography artists are all different. In images throughout typography I've noticed across a range of work that different artists use different techniques to present their work or idea, For example some artist in typography use a base image and around the base image the have key words traveling across the page. And or also some artists make the base image out of the words. Artist do these sorts of things in there work because it helps them develop their own style and help signify that it is their own work. But one of the things that helps you signify that it is a typography artist is through their main image is that there image is filled with writing throughout their work.

Space: In typography artist use their space wisely, They have to or they would find it difficult to not let their work look messy. by spacing there work carefully and giving plenty of room to present the images. It makes their work look clean and present the meaning of their image better.

Influences: Artists are normally influenced by the people around them, and the things they do or and hobbies they have, and what is happening in society at the time.I have noticed that peoples culture affects the way people  design in typography, For example they use symbols from their culture throughout their work, these symbols can help give meaning towards the picture and also helps show who the artist is as a person and where he has come from.
Layout: In typography artists all lay out their work differently. But a lot of the artist use thirds to help lay out there design, By using thirds are eyes are attracted more to the image. It helps us recognize there focal point easier and makes there picture look cleaner and less busy. Making it more aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Composition: Typography artist tend to throughout work have a plain background followed by a more busy foreground. Artist seem to switch from using portrait and landscape images. Pictures normally seem balanced throughout the work. Something is normally balanced out by something if it is out of balance.

Text/type: Artist will tend to use text throughout their images that is where they get the name typography from. Artists use readable font so they can present the meaning of their text. However sometimes artist use different languages to present their culture and where they come from to also present the meaning.

Techniques: Artist use a variety of techniques to present their images, By doing this it helps them signify that it is their own work and helps them develop their own style. Common techniques typography artist use throughout their work is key words, What they do with these keywords is change things like their size and shape throughout an image, This helps present the importance of an idea in an image. By doing this it allows the artist to have control over what they are creating.

Pre Digital

Colour: Pre-Digital Designers colour pallet features stronger brighter toned colours, These colours make edges look more crisp when contrasting with colours. White or earth colours are often used to contrast against the bright more vivid foreground. This helps the focus be drawn to the central image. Designers also use a colour pallet where the main image is brighter and more vivid but it blends into the background, this works well if the meaning or theme of the image is conveyed by the designers.

Main image: The main image in Pre-digital design was developed using traditional drawing methods, These included pencil or stencils. Because they were the things they had access to at the time. Usually the main image was the only image in the piece, The subject matter varied, although it was often the designers were inspired by things around them, That is why there is a lot of people and animals throughout Pre-digital design. I believe people at the time wanted to also document what was happening and they did this through their Pre-digital design.

Space: It was often throughout Pre-digital design that designers used lots of space in their images. This was because it highlight or emphasized the main image. This would make it hard to mistake what it was in there visual piece. There image was normally balanced by having lots of space around their images. I believe having space empty or blank space around your images emphasizes what is going on in the image.

Influences: Pre-digital designers were usually influenced by what was happening around them at the time, That is why their work features a lot of people and animals in their work, or previous work or other peoples work at the time. This is because it was one of the earliest eras of design.

Layout: Pre-digital Designers laid out their work carefully, they worked up in layers doing this, They had to choose carefully what worked well beside each other. Working up in layers enabled them to do this. They would often line up focal points so the picture often seemed symmetrical. This is shown through the coat of arms by Heraldry which is often symmetrical.

Composition: Pre-digital designers would often construct their images around a central focal point. There central focal point or there main image would often feature people, animals, plants, or mythical creatures. The designer would place surrounding elements around the main image. Depending on the designer or design would depend on what they used, They often used white patterns or plants to feature surrounding the image. This would help convey meaning or present an image.

Philosophy: It was Pre-Digital Designers that wanted all their designs to convey some kind of meaning, Whether it was a crest or a design for a novel. To do this designers had to use extreme care not to offend and show importance to what they are designing for. This is why all there work was very similar. Changing ones style may offend someone by being different while also having to convey the meaning for what they are designing for.

Text/type: Text type was an important feature in Pre-digital design, Designers used custom font throughout their designs. There fonts would have to stay consistent throughout their work, Which meant there was extreme care taken. Designers used things like stencils and prints to keep the consistency throughout their work.

Techniques: Pre-Digital Designers used Pencil, Ink, Painting, Printmaking. With procedures along the development of their designs to prevent them from making mistakes were used. because at the time if A error was made, It could result in starting over. They used things like stencils and print templates from preventing them making errors, This enabled them to have clean precised vivid work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_branding

Colour: Corporate Branding designers use a wide range of flat colours on their colour pallet, Normally bright colours are used, they are dulled down using a gradient tool so not so much attention is drawn towards the colour. This helps the colour not stand out and gives a chance for another focal point to be made. Although when corporate logos are created they use a more bright vivid colour pallet so peoples eyes are drawn to the logo or design. A lot of the time colours are paired with contrasting or complementary colours. I believe this works well because the main image is pushed forward to become the focal point.

Main image: The main image in Corporate Branding is often text or symbols,  The text often has something to do with advertising a corporation. Designers often include images of the product or something to do with the corporation they are advertising. Designers also use graphic design to contrast for a background. This is not always used, sometimes a designer will create a blank backdrop depending on the background.

Space:In Corporate Branding, designers do not use a lot of space. The term "less space is more" has been used to describe the amount of space designers like to use. Designers choose to use negative space because it  draws more of the attention towards the main image or the focal point. I believe using lots of negative space does help present the focal point intended. And would work well because it would be easier to understand what was going on.

Influences: Corporate Branding has been influenced by previous generations in advertising, Looking through advertising history you can see improvements or designing evolving from previous advertisement techniques. Influential Corporate designers are Katherine McCoy, Swiss Typography, and Max Huber.

Layout: Corporate Branding is also laid out in layers, It works this way because Designers have better control of what they are doing. The body of work is one of the first layers. This can include things like colours that will contrast with text or emphasize the focal point in the image.  The body of text is normally applied or layered on top of the body of work. Larger text is used when an Designer is wanting to emphasize a point. Points that designers don't seem as important  to emphasize they make smaller. this also helps identify the focal point.
Composition: Corporate Branding artist attempt to make their work aesthetically pleasing to viewers. by doing this they use many design conventions to help develop their work. They use such conventions like the rule of thirds, This helps attract or draw the eye to the viewer, Designers contrast colours to emphasize their main image or focal point. A lot of designers create their design so it is symmetrical.

Design Philosophy: The main point of  Corporate Design is to advertise, So Designers have to create a design that is eye catching, and helps convey a message about what they are advertising. So essentially the main purpose of Corporate Design is to advertise and convey a message to a consumer.

Text/Type: The text in Corporate Branding is an important part towards the design, Because it need to help the viewer understand, and also be eye catching. And legible at the same time. Fonts are often rotated 180 degrees or 90 degrees, but are also still legible. The fonts the designers seem to use are large and simple. This is done so the viewer can easily understand the message to what is going on throughout the design.

Techniques: Corporate Branding is often developed using digital imagery, It is done this way because the final piece looks clean and crisp. This type of design is taken more seriously because it is used for advertisement. So using digital media allows mass production, It gives the ability to re size images. I believe this is good because it give you the ability play with size, mass production and it can be put on different sorts of media because of this.

Colour: Grunge/ Hand Made Designers use Earthy or Dull colours. This colour pallet gives the impression that design is dirty. This is because dull colours give people the impression that colours are dirty. Dull colours help incorporate a dark contrasting colours. Using dull and earthy colour palette gives the impression that the design is unclean. This helps identify a grunge artist.

Main image: Grunge or Hand Made designers often use people, or an object in their designs. A lot of the time the intention of grunge or hand  made images is to capture life of people or an object around the life of the designers, I like this because i believe it allows the artist to get closer there work. I feel it allows the artist to take control of their work, Emotionally or passionately.

Space: Space is used in this style of design is used to help emphasize the main image or point that the designer is trying to convey. In a lot of Grunge/ Hand Made designs, Designers have used contrasting space which help bring forward or present the main image or focal point. A lot of the time space is either kept blank or there is a leakage of colours spilled across the design. This can help give the idea that the design is messy or dirty.

Influences: Grunge is an era of design which is hard to determine where it originated from. The style of design is difficult to determine where the era started was generated. It is possible that early Grunge may have generated by early taggers and icons.

Layout: The overall look to the layout out is a dirty or chaotic but still presentable piece of design that has a strong structure towards it. One of the key ideas from Grunge or Handmade design is when first glanced at the design looks chaotic, Seeing no clear format. But as you take a closer look you see more structure or form.
Composition: Grunge / Hand Made design is very collage like, The way it looks is very messy but does have structure and form. Designers use design conventions to help keep this structure. A lot of this kind of design uses A-symmetry, Rule of thirds, halves. Using and understanding how to use these kind of conventions you can develop and grunge looking image. When Designers also use typography in their design they use the font to take up most the image so it seems powerful and doesn't go unnoticed.

Design philosophy: The Philosophy of design is that the design should be unplanned but spontaneous in its development. Introduce elements that were planned at random that help break the rules of design. But still help the design hold structure and to convey the meaning to a story or theme in the design. The design should be able to relate themselves to the design.

Type/text: In Grunge/ handmade Design test is normally custom depending on design, The artist will normally create a font that is relatable towards the design. These fonts can be digital, Stencil, Free hand, and painted depending on the design.

Techniques: The focus of techniques used around grunge/ Free hand design is using median like paint, spray paint, and printing. this helps develop the dirt like freedom look. Artist now can also use Digital imagery. Using software which also allows the messy dirty look that you have with paints when using canvas or paper.

Colour: Throughout images either Comic or Graffiti artwork, Artist use a wide range of colours, Depending on the artists taste. The artist have their own colour pallet that they choose. Some artists use colour to show detail like shadows, this helps give us a depth of field and perception of the image. For example Moebius above uses a range of colours throughout his images, But he is also very selective when he creates his image. by being selective with colour when an artist creates an image it can help show mood which can communicate the meaning of the image better, and help the viewer understand. Artist who are very selective of colours across a range of work can sometimes be more easily identified, Because those colours help recognize them as an artist easily.

Graffiti and Comic book designers overall use bright hard colours throughout their images. When presenting their work it helps make their image stand out by being bold. But most artist work is dominated using reds, and blacks. This may be done because it communicates the meaning of the image, Whether it's cheerful, happy or aggressive.

Main image: Comic and graffiti artist designs changes dramatically. They all use a variety of subject matter. This helps the designers present different themes and meaning throughout their text. Designers subject matter ranges from people, creatures or monsters and vehicles. There subject matter normally will help us understand a story or idea in a design.

Space: Depending on the designers in graffiti and comic artwork you will see different techniques using space. But a lot of designers use positive space. They fill up their images with subject matter, this helps create a larger scene and also make it look like more is happening in the image. This helps create the busy environment which graffiti and comic book designers use.

Influences: Graffiti seem to be very social artwork. Their work features issues that influence where they come from. For example most graffiti artist seemed to be influenced by political issues or warfare. We see this in America where Banksy and Shepard Fairey use political faces or soldier throughout the visual pieces. They use this subject matter because it helps communicate their idea of the image.

Layout: Comic designers work often appears busy, Despite actually being organized. Comic designers images appear busy but are well laid out, there images normally feature a dramatic background, There background can feature scenery, and subject matter. But there foreground is highlighted from the background using more detail, or the background can be more pale than foreground. So Comic designers also use a foregrounds and backgrounds to create their image. Comic designers also use text in there images, which is often placed towards the top of the image to so it doesn't distract the focal points.

Graffiti designers are different to comic designers, their work can be as busy as the comic designers and also can be simple. I think it's because graffiti designers can often work with massive areas, For example building and such. Graffiti designers do often have a typical layout. Subject matter in the middle of the picture followed by some kind of text in the image. this makes the work look well because it is often relatively easy to understand.

Composition: Comic and graffiti designers use a variety of structure positioning. They both create portrait and landscape images across there text. Graffiti artists also use a variety of shapes for their canvas, because there images are featured across buildings. there designs are often A-symmetrical, there images are still well balanced. They do this by having a positive or negative backgrounds.

Philosophy: Comic design is more made for peoples novelty, It will tell a story but as a graphic novel, And is scripted to help explain scenes or tell the story. The point of Comic design is to entertain using visual pieces. Graffiti is more made for a point. It is to show what someone thinks of an issue, Through one picture in a certain style. It is normally for controversial issues. A lot of the time to do with political issues or warfare, these have both been popular since graffiti's design started.

Type/text: Throughout Comic design text is used to help narrate the story. It helps the view understand what is going on with the text. It's used for speech, or it can be used to describe. Designers are more known to use fonts that are more casual like comic sans, or chalkboard. They use font like this because they help suite the text better than using typewriters fonts. In graffiti, Text is not normally used, It can be. But Graffiti Designers create their image more to tell the issue. If they use Text in their image it's normally to enhance the image, The meaning of the text is important but not as important as the designer.

Techniques: In Comic design artist are likely to use techniques using ink, Paint or print. They tend to edit their work on media like Photoshop or other software. This helps make the their final images sharp and presentable. The technique seems to be more free, They use equipment like Spray paint, Stencils, And wheat paste. These techniques help present their work on walls of buildings, canvas, and all sorts of outdoor areas.

Colour: The colour pallet digital effect designers use is brighter, Designers contrast there main image with contrasting colours, A lot of the this is using blacks and whites. This makes their work look more vibrant and bold. Designers tend to use high saturation levels in the main image, This helps the design become eye catching and draw in viewers by contrasting these high saturation levels of colour.

Main Image: The main image is usually a computer altered image.  This can consist of two things, Some designers create a body of work using photos from the net and some artist use create a visual piece that is completely new. The main image seems to normally be separated from the background this is done using contrasting colours. I think this is good in a design becasue it brings out the intended focus in a image.

Layout: Digital effect designers lay there work out in layers they do this by using a poster, book or a movie cover, The main image is normally centered and surround by a contrasting background, Designers also sometimes lay typography with the main image, This helps identify what the design is trying to communicate to the viewer.

Influences: Digital Effect designers can be influenced by any art source. As long as digitally the designers can convey the way the art source is done. This applies for most digital effect designers. influential designers are April Greiman, Peter Savill,  Nevil Brody, Vaughan Oliver, and Vault 49.
Space: Depending on the designers using digital effects will depend on how much space they use. Some designers choose to use all there space, this can make the image look clustered and messy. Although it is usually well organized and does actually have a crisp structure. When designers choose to use space, They use lots of negative space. They will tend to contrast there space with the main image so the focal point stands out and conveys the meaning of the image. I think using space effetely look aesthetically pleasing because it helps bring out an image and is easier to understand the meaning of the image.

Composition: Digital effect designers use a strong composition, they center there focal point so the image clearly stands out, Or designers will occasionally use the rule of third. This works well because it attracts the eye towards they image. Designers use a lot of empty space, This enables the viewer to understand what the meaning of the image is. I like the composition of digital effect design because it is easier to follow and understand.

Design Philosophy: The design philosophy for Digital Effects design is to convey the meaning of a picture or message using digital techniques. Usually the image will present popular media or a personalized meaning towards the image. I like the idea of digital design because it's modern and ideas are nearly limitless.

Text/ type: Text is used often in design, When designers use text it will normally be used with the main image. Text is often bold and vivid. This makes the text stand out, And become its own focal point. Text fonts can be computer generated or custom made, Normally used in a way to fit the design. This is why text is often changes in colour, Gradients or the opacity. text is often used to contrast against the background, This helps present the text and also allow the text to be legible. I think using text in a piece of design work well because it can create understand or a better meaning to the text.

Technique: Digital Effect designers will work on digital software, Hence the name. Designers will use programs like Photoshop, and Illustrator E.T.C. Using programs like this enable designers to take control of there work, Using digital software lets designers make mistakes and undo what they have done. This can be useful considering when a mistake is made using paint, pen or pencil in tradition method, the result of using digital imagery takes away that problem. I this this kind of method works well. Because you can easily change sizes or what you are doing, It can be quicker and look clean crisp and sharp.
