Edward Penfield

Edward Penfield:

Born/Death: June 2, 1866 Brooklyn New York – February 8, 1925. Known for Illustration design.

Text/type: Edward Penfield Often uses Text throughout his designs, His designs are often Illustrations for books or posters. This is why text was important and why Edward Penfield chose to use text. The text type he often featured was Printed or Pressed fonts, These fonts feature fonts like Arial or Verdana. Using fonts like this at the time were easy to read and eye catching, This is why i believe Edward Penfield chose to use certain font types. Edward Penfield also often used freehand or other techniques in his text types, Techniques he used were overlapping, Contrasting Fonts and colour. Using techniques such as these helps the type of text fit the meaning of the story or poster.

Main Image: The Main Image in Edward Penfield designs often feature people and or Animals. The Main image will often reflect what he is designing for, Edward Penfield often designed for books and posters. This is why his main images feature people, Edward Penfield contrasts the main image or the foreground with the background, For example in the Design or image above uses this, The Foreground or main image is contrasted with the pink background. This helps present the main image and create the main image to  become the focal point.

Colour: Edward Penfield colour pallet is often features earthy colours. This gives the effect that the designs are warm. For example pastel like colours are used in the design on the left. Colour can be used to help create a depth of field, This is shown using highlights and shadows. The background is normally contrasted against the foreground, This is done using either brighter or darker colours than the main image.

Composition: Most of Edward Penfield designs are in a portrait landscape, This presents better for books and posters. The designs are normally built by using a Background, Mid ground, and foreground. These are separated using contrasted colours. This is identified by overlapping. A lot of negative space is used in the background. Normally being one solid colour. I like the composition that Edward Penfield uses because it effective and relatively simple to understand.

Influences: People who may have been influential towards Edward Penfield may have been who he studied under in arts school at New York's Art Students League, Which was George de Forest Brush. This particular artist or designer was known for Romantic Scenes in Native American  Life. His Poster design was similar to European artists like Alphonse Mucha, Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen , and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Techniques/Media: Edward Penfield used traditional methods that designers had to offer them at the time. For example Edward Penfield used techniques or medians such as paint, pencil and pen. But paint being the most common.  This allowed him to create and utilize shapes and a limited pallet of colours of paint or other medians. This helped his posters become bold and vivid and stand out from a distance.

Design Philosophy: It is hard to define what  Edward Penfield philosophy was in design, As it is hard to find what he may have quoted. Because he chose to live the quiet life as a well recognized designer. But if you understand what  Edward Penfield does you will find his work normally will present an image that can cover a piece of text. This is done being simplistic with colours and composition. But at the same time creating a bold vivid piece which stands out at a distance.

Space: The way Edward Penfield uses space in his images is he creates a design that is A-symmetrical piece. He balances out his image or design by normally using lots of negative space in the background. His background will normally feature one strong contrasting colour against the foreground which will feature the focal point or the main image most of the time. This gives the effect the the image looks very empty but can be proven effective at a distance because it stands out and doesn't blend into it's surroundings.

Most Significant Design Elements: Edward Penfield most important design elements feature conventions like using great amounts of space, This makes the background create an effect that it looks flat. Which can allow to bring the focal point forward by overlapping the focal point in front of this great amount of negative space. This is also done by contrasting the colours of background against the foreground.

Frank Miller:

Frank Miller is an  American Comic book artist he is well known for pieces of work such as Batman, Sin City, 300, The Spirit. He is classed as a writer and an artist at the same time. He has won numerous awards with his work. He is also a director and has directed movies such as Robocop.

Born: Born January 27, 1957-present.

Text/type: Text is often used throughout Comic design, It is normally is used to present a storyline or convey a message from the picture associated with the image. Frank Miller does use this throughout his designs. he will often use a printed handwritten type of font, Using a font like this looks readable and also traditional at the same time. His fonts are always either black contrasted by white. or white contrasted by black. This helps give the effect that the font is text. It also ties into his style or signature in art, Black, white and red. He very often uses other colours.

Main Image: Frank Miller’s Main Image often features hand drawn black and white very finely detailed images. These images are targeted to appeal to a range of people from people around the age of 12 to adults. They will be centered in the image, normally often surrounded by contrasting fine detail or a boarder. Frank Miller will contrast the images in a way to emphasizes his own main image.  They will Consistently take up a lot of space throughout Frank Miller's body of work. Frank Miller's designs will often feature his comically characters. These subjects range from Batman, Wolverine, Or his most well known images from Sin City.

Colour: Frank Miller's is very well known for using a specific colour palette. His colour palette throughout most of his body of work features the three colours; Black, and White being the primary colours or the most commonly used colours. Then adding pieces of red to which stand out or emphasize certain parts of the image, or he will often use the red for titles and such. This is not done in every image. Frank Miller is very selective over his colours. It makes him seem like he has a lot of control over what he is creating with his colour.

Space: When constructing an image Frank Miller will often fill most of his space with main images when constructing an image. Other piece’s of the image are filled with contrasting fine details or selective blocks of colour surrounding the main image. In a lot of Frank Miller’s designs this will bring the design out or forward from the background. I believe this works well because it gives us a depth of field and scale within in the design.

Composition: Frank Miller will consistently use design techniques to help him develop his image and show good composition within a design. Frank Miller will use certain techniques to do this, These techniques range from use of shapes, arrangement, balance, and symmetry. The way Frank Miller will arrange his images is a big part of his design, Frank Miller will carefully place certain parts of his designs in areas of the pictures, Because placing placing parts of the design elsewhere can change the meaning of a design from things like power, and control. This is shown in the image above the title, The size of the face is made bigger in the image to let viewers understand something new to the design, and understanding on what is to be in the following images. Frank Miller will balance his images carefully so his images do not look untidy or too busy. This can be done using busy scenes contrasting against huge block colours. Overall the style of Frank Miller's designs are busy, Organised, and Aesthetically pleasing to glamor at.

Influences: Frank Miller from a young age grew up reading Marvel comic books. Writing letter to the Marvel cooperation. So you could assume Key artists/ Designers like Stan Lee were big influences on his Frank Miller work. You can see styles/influential conventions coming from Marvel comics and being incorporated throughout Frank Miller's work.

Techniques/Media: Frank Miller’s familiar areas and techniques within design, are things such as Writing, Pencil, Ink, Directing, Screenwriting and Acting. These are the skills which Frank Miller  is known a being extraordinary at, His work is mainly made up with with comic books which the designers are hand drawn using either pencil or ink, And then combined and mass printed into comics and sent and sold to millions of viewers.

Design Philosophy: Frank Miller’s comic book designs consists of black and white imagery with selective colour (normally red) created in a sequence which is then made up into comics which tells a  story using captions E.T.C. The style of the designs consist of people who are drawn using black and white pencil and ink, Those people are used to help create or move the sequence through dialogue.
His designs will consist of being used for variety of things, Known as Illustrated books/Graphic Novels, Covers, Posters, and DVD covers.

Most Significant Design Elements: Use of colour, Black, and White, with small amounts of other selected colour, Mainly known for being red. The designs consist of finely precise detail over the entire design. with black and white colour blocks used to contrast against character to make them stand forward from the designs to give us a depth of field. Captions are used surround the focal point to help portray a scene and help the understand of a text.
