3.1 Task D Jacob Marsh

Designer Model: David Carson
Born September 8, 1954.

General Information: David Carson is an American graphic designer, art director, and surfer. Is best known for his magazine design, An his use of experimental typography. Carson was perhaps the most influential graphic designer of the 1990s
Was the art director for famous magazine Ray Gun. Which had a lot of use of typography and layout style which he is best known for. In particularly  his well known recognisable design style was and is known for the “Grunge typography.”
Attended San Diego State University, Graduating with a bachelor of arts in sociology, It was later when he attended a two week course at University of Arizona with jacksons belt where he was first introduced into Typography in 1980.
In 1989 he was ranked 9th in the world at surfing. David Carson's design are influenced heavily by the types of things that interesting, Like surfing.
Has received numerous amounts of awards during his designing time, And is still winning prizes today.

Technical Information:
David Carson's designs are often either Portrait or Landscape, His images range with effects from layering, Collaging, Photography, Sketches  and Typography. All of these techniques are well thought about and seen with clarity, They are forged into one, and what this does is creates an inspirational image.

Subject Matter: David Carson uses often uses words and people as subject matter, These pieces used together to form the  main image. What these do is  present the idea behind the design. So often the words are formed in a way to communicate the meaning of an image. The meaning behind the image using the subject matter to portray this is often to do with advertising. This is hence what a lot of David Carson work is for.

Composition: In David Carson's designs his images often feature A-symmetrical balance. This is done using lots of vertical and horizontal lines through the image. These lines are formed using words and people as subject matter. Often throughout his body of work, Subject matter is located in the center of the image. This creates a central focal point. From the center of the image pieces are pushed backwards upon the design. This gives the design a design a depth of field.

Method/Process:

Philosophy: Carson’s philosophy of design is exemplified in his work. There are no boundaries, none for images, none for text, and none for his imagination. Ideas can be limitless. When viewing Carson’s designs the individual viewer does not have to understand exactly what they are seeing. But rather come out with curiosity or confusion, even Admiration.  His unique style has been called illegible. Rules of design are constantly and consistently broken in Carson's work

Explain your response to the work in focus:
What has worked best in the design?
What main aspects or features of art and design did artist/designer consider?
What according to you are the significant aspects to consider for this artwork/ design? and why?
What other design applications/ media could have worked well and why?
Write an analysis of the context/ environment this design/ artwork exists in?
Possible background or history associated to the image?

Analysis:
Carson’s design typifies his work in many ways. It is overall symmetrical. it employs the use of vivid color, it contains multiple levels for the viewer to understand what is being told, and it has an  modern instinctive aptitude or ability for doing something well.  The texture of the work makes the viewer want to reach out and touch the design to help feel the image.Parts of the image start to create motion, and give feeling towards the picture. Carson uses the block at the right of the design to say something again and drag this idea across the image/ Design. Carson designs have been influential in the design community this is because he continuously test the design limits in and around certain types of imagery. His designs will present multiple meanings within an design. And this proves that Carson is an inspiration to new designers being produced today.

Image Analysis:

Text/type: David Carson will use in a variety of ways throughout an image. He thinks about overlapping, colour, size, lettering, and meaning just within the text type.
In this image/design the text is used in a way which forges the the text with the main image,(The man) this Makes the man apart of the text. Giving the effect that the text and man are the the main image. David Carson has done this in a way which gives the text a depth of field,Making the text apart of the foreground and also the mid ground.

Main image: David Carson in the image has used a photograph of a man to become the main image, He has forged the lettering or text with the man to make him apart of the image. This is un-normal in terms of designs and is not often seen, This is what helps distinguish what David Carson's style in Design is. The colours of both the man and text are separated using contrasting colours, Although are still combined using overlapping. This gives a sense of unity within the image. This is often shown throughout David Carson designs.

Colour: David Carson uses often whites and blacks to present a majority of his work. He will often uses a variety of other colours to present this. What this does is changes a lot of the moods to do with the text.

Space: David Carson uses space to create a depth of field within an image. This is done by using things like perspective, overlapping enlarging and shrinking within a design. Evenly spacing the image can make the image look

3.1 Task (C)

Differences

Artists:
Illustration
Edward Penfield
Comic/ Graffiti
Examples:Frank Miller
Use of
Convention 1.
Convention 2.
Colour
Throughout Illustration design Artist use Dull & Bright colours in an design. Often the colour pallet chosen will present significant meaning towards the theme design for. Childrens books often feature bright and vivid colours to attract or draw them towards the book. Also girls will tend to be pulled to a design using pick rather than blue E.T.C

Example:
Edward Penfield will use a range of colours throughout a design which differs to what Frank Miller does. Frank Millers images will only really feature two main colours and sometimes features reds. The difference that this creates in a design is that the two artists images, one either seem to be more detailed than than the other whilst the other image seems to be flat. So one Designers images tend to have a stronger depth of field than the other.
Throughout images either Comic or Graffiti artwork, Artist use a wide range of colours, Depending on the artists taste. The artist have their own colour pallet that they choose. Some artists use colour to show detail like shadows, this helps give us a depth of field and perception of the image.

Example:
In Edward Penfield designs his use of colour makes an image more rough versus Frank Miller designs which are smooth because his use of colour palette. Edward Penfields designs being rough makes an image look more detailed than what you would expect to see in Frank miller's designs. This means that the way Edward Penfield uses colour is used and thought about with more detail and care than what Frank Miller would choose to do.
Main Image
The main image in Illustration Design will often be a character, Or a something that plays a significant role to the text being presented. They can be located in different parts of the image but are often very visible to the eye. They are used to drag people in from all ages, They can be often scary or cute.
Example:
In Edward Penfields designs you notice that the main image is normally the only detailed part of a design. In Frank Miller’s Designs this differs by Frank miller who tends to use detailed backdrops to contrast and be a part of his designs, Where Edward Penfield’s Designs Are contrasted solid colours.
Comic and graffiti artist designs changes dramatically. They all use a variety of subject matter. This helps the designers present different themes and meaning throughout their text. Designers subject matter ranges from people, creatures or monsters and vehicles. There subject matter normally will help us understand a story or idea in a design.
Example:
In Edward Penfields designs you will notice the main image will look a lot different to what Frank Miller's designs will look. Edward Penfields differ to Frank Millers by the use of colour, and Style that Edward Penfield’s designs will use.
Space
Example:
In Edward Penfield’s designs you will notice the way he spaces out a design is a lot different to the way Frank Miller will space out a design. When you look and compare both artist you will notice that Edward Penfield’s designs are often less filled, Giving a more empty effect to what you would expect to see with Frank miller's designs. This empty effect is giving by having not a lot of detail surrounding the main image like Frank Miller would use, and using solid earthy colours around the image.
Example:
Because Edward Penfield’s  design  do not features a detailed background surrounding the main image, You will not as clearly see the depth of field that Frank Miller's designs will give, Looking and comparing Frank Miller's designs to Edward Penfield’s. The detail in the background that Frank Miller uses gives or presents the depth of field within a design much better than what you see in Edward Penfield’s  design.
Influences
Influential material can be from all styles of art in illustration design. It is normally how the designers manipulates this and transform this which is shown through their work. You will identify this when this is seen.
Example:
In Frank Miller's designs the influences towards his own work is much larger than what you would expect to with Edward Penfield’s. Frank Miller was born in an Era where design was more sociable accepted than what you would see with Edward Penfield’s designs. So basing on what time you are born can influence heavily on what is available to use and not to use around you. For example computer design will may become a lot more definite than what painting e.t.c are because it is easier and quicker to use.
Graffiti seem to be very social artwork. Their work features issues that influence where they come from. For example most graffiti artist seemed to be influenced by political issues or warfare.
Example:
In Edward Penfield’s designs he may have been influenced by what was made available to him at the time, Artist or designers around him like the people around him, Example New York's Art Students League, Which was George de Forest Brush. whom he had studied under. Where Frank Millers was influenced differently, he was influenced by what he saw as a child. He has been said to have read and manipulated comics from a young age based on famous designs such as Stan Lee of Marvel Comics.
Layout
Depending on the designers you will get different layouts, Some designers choose to use very little space and have the design rather empty whilst other compact an image into many different parts. Both work conventionally and present different types of meanings in the context.
Example:
The way Edward Penfield’s will lay out his designs is different to way Frank Miller’s designs are laid out. Edward Penfield’s designs consist of consistent layout techniques throughout his body of work. His designs are often laid out using a the following technique listed. He will Use a Earthy coloured backdrop that will contrast against the main image which is normally located in the foreground of the design. Then often or sometimes Typography techniques are used to lay tiles on the image in the foreground. The colour of the font will contrast against the rest of the design using another earth like colour.
Comic designers work often appears busy, Despite actually being organized. Comic designers images appear busy but are well laid out, there images normally feature a dramatic background, There background can feature scenery, and subject matter.
Example:
The way Frank Miller will lay out a design is different to the way Edward Penfield’s designs are laid out. He will often use detailed backgrounds using textures or images which will contrast against the multiple main images in the midground foreground. the main images are also detailed black and white images. Captions and titles to present the image are often surround the image which are separated using colour. The style of how both artist present their work is  similar but gives two very different results throughout their designs.
Composition
Composition changes for each individual designer. This will change because of their style or intent of a design
Example:
Edward Penfield’s designs are often or nearly always portrait images, This is because his images are used for posters book covers e.t.c. His images are often balanced this is done using good arrangement around a image. Although his image tend never to be symmetrical and instead A-symmetrical. The main image is often lopsided to one way to show this. But the image still has a sense of balance by lots of empty space placed surrounding the main image.
Comic and graffiti designers use a variety of structure positioning. They both create portrait and landscape images across there text. Graffiti artists also use a variety of shapes for their canvas, because there images are featured across buildings. there designs are often A-symmetrical, there images are still well balanced. They do this by having a positive or negative backgrounds.
Example:
Frank Miller’s compositional design differ quite a lot from Edward Penfield’s designs. The designs are made up of portrait and landscape images with alignment of focal points or main images from all sorts of places over looking at a body of work. His images are never symmetrical image but are still balanced by using detailed textures or captions and or titles in the foreground.
Philosophy
In Illustration design the idea is to present a story through pictures which is often narrated at the bottom of the page, Like you will see in children books and such. Depending on the designer they will use their own techniques to do this.
Example:
Edward Penfield’s are often different but a lot the same as what frank miller would use. but it is hard to define what  Edward Penfield philosophy was in design, As it is hard to find what he may have quoted. Because he chose to live the “quiet life” as a well recognized designer. But if you understand what  Edward Penfield does you will find his work normally will present an image that can cover a piece of text. This is done being simplistic with colours and composition. But at the same time creating a bold vivid piece which stands out at a distance.
Comic design is more made for peoples novelty, It will tell a story but as a graphic novel, And is scripted to help explain scenes or tell the story. The point of Comic design is to entertain using visual pieces. Graffiti is more made for a point. It is to show what someone thinks of an issue.
Example:
Frank Miller’s comic book designs consists of black and white imagery with selective colour (normally red) created in a sequence which is then made up into comics which tells a  story using captions E.T.C. The style of the designs consist of people who are drawn using black and white pencil and ink, Those people are used to help create or move the sequence through dialogue.
The Bases of the two designers is very much the same, But the way the two different designers interpretation this is different, Which obviously results in two different styles in design.
Typography
Typography in Illustration design is often quite common. It can be used to caption what a character is saying. And is also placed at the bottom of the text to present the idea or narrate the story.

Example:
Both artists use typography in their designs, Edward Penfield’s Designs will of feature this using it in contexts like titles for presenting things such as books and posters for events. This results in fonts easy available to understand and to look professional within the design. I would say his fonts often support the same style of drawings because they are hand drawn.
Throughout Comic design text is used to help narrate the story. It helps the view understand what is going on with the text. It's used for speech, or it can be used to describe. Designers are more known to use fonts that are more casual like comic sans, or chalkboard. They use font like this because they help suite the text better than using typewriters fonts. In graffiti, Text is not normally used, It can be. But Graffiti Designers create their image more to tell the issue. If they use Text in their image it's normally to enhance the image, The meaning of the text is important but not as important as the designer.
Example:
Both artists use typography in their designs, Frank Miller uses it to help illustrate his designs throughout his body of work, this is done using captions, and Titles. The tiles are often Red to help present an important idea within the text in Frank Miller’s. And things like captions surrounding the image are inserted more like a book to help tell or present the storyline to the designs.
Techniques
Certain designers will use different techniques to craft an image. This can be done digitally, or interactively in many different ways. For generations different artist have been illustrating events and such, This is shown across the globe on ruins and such. It is one of the many ways homosabians will communicate to each other, An illustration can present One thousands words.

Example:
Edward Penfield’s will tend to use more traditional techniques to what Frank miller would use this is because of what Edward Penfield was because of the style of his work and the method that there was available at the time to Edward Penfield. These traditional techniques consisted of use of Pencil, Pen, and Paint. paint being the most common throughout his methods and techniques in forming a design. paint allowed him to utilize what he had available to him and gave more options with colours, and Textures than what you could get with Pencil or Pen. This helped his images stand out from a distance and become more vivid and controlled.

In Comic design artist are likely to use techniques using ink, Paint or print. They tend to edit their work on media like Photoshop or other software. This helps make the their final images sharp and presentable. The technique seems to be more free, They use equipment like Spray paint, Stencils, And wheat paste. These techniques help present their work on walls of buildings, canvas, and all sorts of outdoor areas.

Example:
Frank Millers Techniques differ a lot from what Edward Penfield’s Traditional method or techniques were. Frank Miller would use Pencil and Pen to draw sketch of his designs main images, Backgrounds e.t.c. But after this modernisation has allowed him to digital alter him image when it has come to presenting his work, This would make his would look highly professional and keep consistent throughout his body of work. Although this was not made available to him when first starting out and has only came available to him since technology has developed of the latest years.

Summary: Certain aspects of Designers techniques and method make it easier to spot certain conventions or aspect in their designs.

Edward Penfield

Edward Penfield:

Born/Death: June 2, 1866 Brooklyn New York – February 8, 1925. Known for Illustration design.

Text/type: Edward Penfield Often uses Text throughout his designs, His designs are often Illustrations for books or posters. This is why text was important and why Edward Penfield chose to use text. The text type he often featured was Printed or Pressed fonts, These fonts feature fonts like Arial or Verdana. Using fonts like this at the time were easy to read and eye catching, This is why i believe Edward Penfield chose to use certain font types. Edward Penfield also often used freehand or other techniques in his text types, Techniques he used were overlapping, Contrasting Fonts and colour. Using techniques such as these helps the type of text fit the meaning of the story or poster.

Main Image: The Main Image in Edward Penfield designs often feature people and or Animals. The Main image will often reflect what he is designing for, Edward Penfield often designed for books and posters. This is why his main images feature people, Edward Penfield contrasts the main image or the foreground with the background, For example in the Design or image above uses this, The Foreground or main image is contrasted with the pink background. This helps present the main image and create the main image to  become the focal point.

Edward Penfield

Colour: Edward Penfield colour pallet is often features earthy colours. This gives the effect that the designs are warm. For example pastel like colours are used in the design on the left. Colour can be used to help create a depth of field, This is shown using highlights and shadows. The background is normally contrasted against the foreground, This is done using either brighter or darker colours than the main image.

Composition: Most of Edward Penfield designs are in a portrait landscape, This presents better for books and posters. The designs are normally built by using a Background, Mid ground, and foreground. These are separated using contrasted colours. This is identified by overlapping. A lot of negative space is used in the background. Normally being one solid colour. I like the composition that Edward Penfield uses because it effective and relatively simple to understand.

Influences: People who may have been influential towards Edward Penfield may have been who he studied under in arts school at New York's Art Students League, Which was George de Forest Brush. This particular artist or designer was known for Romantic Scenes in Native American  Life. His Poster design was similar to European artists like Alphonse Mucha, Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen , and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Techniques/Media: Edward Penfield used traditional methods that designers had to offer them at the time. For example Edward Penfield used techniques or medians such as paint, pencil and pen. But paint being the most common.  This allowed him to create and utilize shapes and a limited pallet of colours of paint or other medians. This helped his posters become bold and vivid and stand out from a distance.

Design Philosophy: It is hard to define what  Edward Penfield philosophy was in design, As it is hard to find what he may have quoted. Because he chose to live the quiet life as a well recognized designer. But if you understand what  Edward Penfield does you will find his work normally will present an image that can cover a piece of text. This is done being simplistic with colours and composition. But at the same time creating a bold vivid piece which stands out at a distance.

Space: The way Edward Penfield uses space in his images is he creates a design that is A-symmetrical piece. He balances out his image or design by normally using lots of negative space in the background. His background will normally feature one strong contrasting colour against the foreground which will feature the focal point or the main image most of the time. This gives the effect the the image looks very empty but can be proven effective at a distance because it stands out and doesn't blend into it's surroundings.

Most Significant Design Elements: Edward Penfield most important design elements feature conventions like using great amounts of space, This makes the background create an effect that it looks flat. Which can allow to bring the focal point forward by overlapping the focal point in front of this great amount of negative space. This is also done by contrasting the colours of background against the foreground.

Frank Miller:

Frank Miller is an  American Comic book artist he is well known for pieces of work such as Batman, Sin City, 300, The Spirit. He is classed as a writer and an artist at the same time. He has won numerous awards with his work. He is also a director and has directed movies such as Robocop.

Born: Born January 27, 1957-present.

Text/type: Text is often used throughout Comic design, It is normally is used to present a storyline or convey a message from the picture associated with the image. Frank Miller does use this throughout his designs. he will often use a printed handwritten type of font, Using a font like this looks readable and also traditional at the same time. His fonts are always either black contrasted by white. or white contrasted by black. This helps give the effect that the font is text. It also ties into his style or signature in art, Black, white and red. He very often uses other colours.

Main Image: Frank Miller’s Main Image often features hand drawn black and white very finely detailed images. These images are targeted to appeal to a range of people from people around the age of 12 to adults. They will be centered in the image, normally often surrounded by contrasting fine detail or a boarder. Frank Miller will contrast the images in a way to emphasizes his own main image.  They will Consistently take up a lot of space throughout Frank Miller's body of work. Frank Miller's designs will often feature his comically characters. These subjects range from Batman, Wolverine, Or his most well known images from Sin City.

Colour: Frank Miller's is very well known for using a specific colour palette. His colour palette throughout most of his body of work features the three colours; Black, and White being the primary colours or the most commonly used colours. Then adding pieces of red to which stand out or emphasize certain parts of the image, or he will often use the red for titles and such. This is not done in every image. Frank Miller is very selective over his colours. It makes him seem like he has a lot of control over what he is creating with his colour.

Space: When constructing an image Frank Miller will often fill most of his space with main images when constructing an image. Other piece’s of the image are filled with contrasting fine details or selective blocks of colour surrounding the main image. In a lot of Frank Miller’s designs this will bring the design out or forward from the background. I believe this works well because it gives us a depth of field and scale within in the design.

Composition: Frank Miller will consistently use design techniques to help him develop his image and show good composition within a design. Frank Miller will use certain techniques to do this, These techniques range from use of shapes, arrangement, balance, and symmetry. The way Frank Miller will arrange his images is a big part of his design, Frank Miller will carefully place certain parts of his designs in areas of the pictures, Because placing placing parts of the design elsewhere can change the meaning of a design from things like power, and control. This is shown in the image above the title, The size of the face is made bigger in the image to let viewers understand something new to the design, and understanding on what is to be in the following images. Frank Miller will balance his images carefully so his images do not look untidy or too busy. This can be done using busy scenes contrasting against huge block colours. Overall the style of Frank Miller's designs are busy, Organised, and Aesthetically pleasing to glamor at.

Influences: Frank Miller from a young age grew up reading Marvel comic books. Writing letter to the Marvel cooperation. So you could assume Key artists/ Designers like Stan Lee were big influences on his Frank Miller work. You can see styles/influential conventions coming from Marvel comics and being incorporated throughout Frank Miller's work.

Techniques/Media: Frank Miller’s familiar areas and techniques within design, are things such as Writing, Pencil, Ink, Directing, Screenwriting and Acting. These are the skills which Frank Miller  is known a being extraordinary at, His work is mainly made up with with comic books which the designers are hand drawn using either pencil or ink, And then combined and mass printed into comics and sent and sold to millions of viewers.

Design Philosophy: Frank Miller’s comic book designs consists of black and white imagery with selective colour (normally red) created in a sequence which is then made up into comics which tells a  story using captions E.T.C. The style of the designs consist of people who are drawn using black and white pencil and ink, Those people are used to help create or move the sequence through dialogue.
His designs will consist of being used for variety of things, Known as Illustrated books/Graphic Novels, Covers, Posters, and DVD covers.

Most Significant Design Elements: Use of colour, Black, and White, with small amounts of other selected colour, Mainly known for being red. The designs consist of finely precise detail over the entire design. with black and white colour blocks used to contrast against character to make them stand forward from the designs to give us a depth of field. Captions are used surround the focal point to help portray a scene and help the understand of a text.
